Philippine Opera Company to mount Sondheim’s Tony-winning ‘Passion’

Philippine Opera Company (POC) is marking its 20th anniversary this year by mounting the Manila production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s critically acclaimed 1994 Tony- and Drama Desk Award-winning musical “Passion” at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium this September.

POC is the only opera company in the country that produces regular opera productions. Founded in 1999, it is committed to broadening the audience for opera by performing in malls, parks, schools, community centers and other places.

The complex landscape of the human heart is the subject of “Passion,” a haunting, intensely emotional musical by the creators of “Into The Woods” and “Sunday in the Park with George.”

“Passion” is a modern operetta and takes its cue from the 1981 Ettore Scola film, “Passione d’Amore,” which itself is based on an 1869 novel, “Fosca,” by Igino Tarchetti.

At a remote military outpost in 1863 Italy, a handsome army captain Giorgio, is separated from his beautiful—but married—mistress, Clara. He is forced to reevaluate his beliefs about love when he becomes the object of the obsessive, unrelenting passions of Fosca, his colonel’s plain, sickly cousin.

The sweeping romantic score accompanies an intelligent, thought-provoking book that bears Lapine’s trademark lyricism and a host of well-drawn characters.

Cast includes musical theater stars Shiela Valderrama, Jasmine Fitzgerald and Vien King. They will be accompanied by the Philippine Opera Orchestra. Director is award-winning Robbie Guevara.

“Passion” will run for a limited 10 shows at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater, RCBC Plaza Sept. 14-29.

“Passion” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International New York. —CONTRIBUTED
