Forget wedding trends—go for what makes you happy

Be perfect from head to toe for the big day, with options from Rustan’s.

For your wedding, show your personality instead of following trends.

This is what Janna Simpao advised during “Bliss! An Afternoon to Celebrate Your Engagement,” a bridal event at Rustan’s Makati. Simpao is editor in chief of Bride and Breakfast, a wedding resource blog.

“I don’t believe in trends because a wedding is very classic,” she added. “Couples should put their personalities into their wedding. And that is what changes yearly. A lot of these weddings are timeless.”

However, she said that there are trends in terms of experience. Brides and grooms want their guests to have a unique experience. It can be something as simple as a photo wall for the ’Gram, to something more personalized, like a cocktail bar with interactive food stalls.

“People are not just looking at aesthetically pleasing weddings, but also something that’s experientially memorable,” said Simpao.

“Bride and Breakfast started out as an online site to help brides and grooms prepare for their wedding day. But we also wanted to meet them face-to-face and talk to them about the wedding challenges. Rustan’s was the perfect partner for that.”

Simpao has probably seen it all, after 10 years of running her blog. Brides now have access to a variety of information.

Simple, classic

“Some go for the simple, classic and romantic look,” she said. “But you have couples now going for thematic weddings, like ‘Star Wars,’ something really distinctive to their personalities. It’s your wedding. Go for whatever makes you happy.”

But even when you want to go for something extremely unique, you have to be mindful of your event’s tastefulness and elegance. Simpao said that even fun theme weddings can have those qualities.

Stylist Adrianne Concepcion said that brides do not have to worry if they are not size zero or model size. They only need to find the silhouette that works perfectly for them. A close working relationship with the designer allows them to achieve a look closest to their pegs.

For “Bliss!,” Rustan’s Makati’s fifth floor was divided into areas, with booths for skincare by products like Murad, L’Occitane, Clarins, Clinique and Dermalogica to prepare the bride for the big day. Bobbi Brown offered makeup trials.

For grooms, there was Ascot Chang’s  bespoke suits and shirts. There were also shoes for couples from Christian Louboutin, Aquazurra, and Umber.

Couples also got to create their Rustan’s gift registry, which features luggage, pillows and bed linens, and tableware, among others.
