Art Lozana uses popular-culture images in charting the contours and lineaments of inner personal landscapes in “Unveiling A New Day (Art Lozano’s Recent Works),” now running at the Galerie Joaquin at The Podium in Mandaluyong City.
“The works are more about an internal landscape of self-discovery and spiritual growth,” said art writer Grace Ng. “For this exhibition, perplexing images of popular vintage cars emerge from the depths of his own psyche. Juxtaposing personal elements of symbol, metaphor and cultural iconography, he creates a form of open-ended storytelling which offers cryptic answers to his viewers’ queries about blissful existence.
“Art Lozano uses archetypal images from retro-pop culture as metaphorical players in a scenario intended to illustrate the marvels of common human life experiences, including the poignancy of decay and ruination, but also principles of rebirth, wonder, exhilaration and creative freedom.”
“Vintage automobiles, in particular the Volkswagen Beetle, historically have given unique identities and delightful moments to its owners, collectors and avid followers, often serving as a beacon, beckoning viewers to recount their unwinding passion,” said Ng. “This notion forms the heart of what Art Lozano creates.”
A painter from Ilocos, Lozano has won the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual Art Competition,
Metro Bank Art and Design
Excellence National Competition, Government Service
Insurance System (GSIS) Art Award, and the Philip Morris Art Award. He is a member of the Baguio Tam-awan Artist Group. —CONTRIBUTED
