The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has started a two-month-long registration period in line with the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections to be held on May 11, 2020.

Here’s a simple guide for those who want to register and exercise their right to vote.

Who can register?

Those who are at least 15 years old and not more than 30 years old on May 11, 2020, who have lived in their voting location for at least six months, may register. (You have to be at least 18 years old to register for and vote in the national elections in May 2022.)

All those who missed the registration for the 2019 midterm elections may also register. Those who already voted in the last elections do not need to register again.

When can you register?

The registration period is until Sept. 30. Comelec offices are open Monday to Saturday, including holidays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Satellite offices set up in malls also accept registrants.

What are the requirements?

Download and fill out an appication form at www.comelec.gov.ph. The Comelec also requires at least one valid identification card to register. (A passport, company ID, driver’s license, school ID, NBI clearance, PWD ID, Postal ID, senior citizen ID, SSS ID, and GSIS ID are accepted.)

Keep in mind that once you are registered, you need to exercise your right to vote. Failure to vote in two regular elections will inactivate your status as a voter, and you will need to reactivate it according to Comelec rules.

Change starts by registering to vote in local and national elections. Let your voice be heard and exercise your right and power to help bring about the changes you want for the country. —CONTRIBUTED
