Feast of St. Dominic
Members of the Dominican family of friars, sisters, lay people and clerical fraternities all over the country celebrated the Solemnity of St. Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Order of Preachers (OP), or Dominicans, last Aug. 8 at Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City.
Legend has it that the Blessed Mother gave the rosary to St. Dominic and historically, the Dominicans have been the primary advocates of the rosary devotion.
Making the affair extra memorable was the presence of the very Rev. Gerard Francisco Timoner II, OP, who was elected last July 13 as the new Master of the Dominican Order, the first Filipino and the first Asian.
Father Timoner will succeed French Dominican physician Fr. Bruno Cadore, OP, of whom he was socius or associate for the Asia-Pacific in the Dominican curia in Rome before his election.
Timoner is the 88th successor of St. Dominic.
He is the lone Philippine member of the 30-man International Theological Commission, which advises Pope Francis.
