The return of the doily

Combine paper and embroidered cloth doilies.

Doilies have been around since time immemorial; it is, in fact, a name  from a London draper in the 17th century named Doily. In the past, a proper table setting was never without an intricate doily.

The doily somehow lost its popularity because of the practicality of modern times. But because of the resurgence of elegance in table settings, doilies may be back.

So it is high time to bring out the beautiful lace and crocheted pieces we inherited from previous generations, so we could update them as doilies. Here’s a great idea that will bring doilies in style.

Gather odd pieces of doilies, cloth, crocheted items, and even paper (or purchase them at SM, Landmark, Rustan’s or Robinsons).

For this vignette, we will use a cup and saucer, tea pot, some books, a couple of blooms.

Blooms in a teacup, with a paper doily under the cup and saucer, add interest to the vignette.

Spread out the bigger doilies on the surface of your table.

Make sure that the spaces in between will be just enough to be covered by your smaller doilies.

Fill up the gaps with the smaller doilies, ending with the smallest ones.

Overlapping them in a random fashion that looks balanced on both sides should do the trick.

Position the cup and saucer to your right, at the center of one of the doilies.

For extras, add a paper doily as a liner under the cup. Then stack the little books and perch on the pile the tea pot that appears ready to pour.
