Women artists Ebarle & Valero stretch limits of abstraction

“Hibla” series by Jane Ebarle

Opening Nov. 10 at Arte Pintura Gallery in Quezon City, “E.V.A. (Ebarle + Valero + Abstraction)” brings two major women-artists, Jane Ebarle and Valen Valero, who have been consistent in exploring the limits of abstraction both for artistic expression and personal probings.

The exhibit will feature Ebarle’s signature “Hibla” series, her ode to colorful and elaborate Philippine indigenous textiles and Valero’s thought-provoking “geographical” interpretations of her musings and beliefs.

In her works, Valero uses vibrant but muted colors as well as boxes, lines, blocks, quadrants, letters, numbers and writings to express her emotions and psychological explorations.

Her geometry is defined as “always fluid and off kilter—elements disappear, reappear and that what makes it dynamic.”

Meanwhile inspired by the rich weaving tradition of the country, Pangasinan-born Ebarle draws inspiration from the textile patterns of the various Philippine indigenous groups.

Merging abstraction and indigenous textile designs has made her art unique so that “Hibla” has become synonymous with Ebarle.

Exhibit opens on Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. at Arte Pintura Gallery, 94 White Plains, Katipunan Ave., Quezon City. It will run until Nov. 24.—CONTRIBUTED
