Richard Perez’ large-scale works use knotted yarn to portray imaginative settings evoking wonder and fascination.
Perez’ thread work employs the cross-hatch technique, which sculpts the lines of his paintings; it binds, wraps and webs large shapes and imbuing them with three dimensionality.
The imagery comes from nature, figures entwined with organic forms. Composition, balance, color theory, physical technique and personal interpretation all hold value in the creation of hand-spun yarn. “The combinations communicate Perez’ human craving for genuine interconnection and relationship as he confronts the comforts of this industrialized, homogenized and frequently mundane world,” writes art writer Grace Ng.
An in-house artist of Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan, for four years, Perez has returned to Bicol where he has a studio in Naga, Camarines Sur. He has done commissioned 3D wall murals in Metro Manila, Bicol and Agusan del Norte.
