Art Lounge Manila at The Podium will open “Juvenal Sansó: Jubilation!” on Nov. 19, 6 p.m., to mark the Presidential Medal of Merit awardee’s 90th birthday.
The exhibit, in coordination with Fundacion Santiago, will show 40 works which mark each decade of Sansó’s 70-year art career.
A prolific printmaker, painter, scenographer, textile designer, photographer and sculptor, Sansó has exhibited in Europe, North America and Latin America.
His works are collected in major art museums around the world—the MoMA of New York, Getty Institute, Smithsonian and many other museums in the US have collected his prints. His paintings are in museums in Madrid and Paris, where he was based for more than 50 years
Sansó has been made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the Republic of France. Spain has given him the Cross of Isabela for his accomplishments.
But the Spanish painter has always been identified with the Philippines. He was the first artist in the country to present an all-print exhibition in 1957.
He was the first artist in the Philippines to exhibit 1,000 works in his 1976 retrospective.
Sansó has also pioneered many art forms including cameraless photographs and painted Kodachrome slides. Many of these, and some of his important works, can be found in the museum created to preserve and protect his legacy—the Fundacion Sansó—in San Juan City.
“Juvenal Sansó: Jubilation!” presents a unique opportunity for collectors to get a hold of his works, or for the art enthusiast to have an idea of the breadth of the body of work by this important international artist.
