Why there are more crimes and suicides during the full moon

The moon is 384,400 kilometers (or 238,900 miles) from the earth, and yet it exerts tremendous influence on human life.

It is well known that high tides and low tides are caused by the moon. The moon’s gravitational pull generates what is called the “tidal” force that causes earth and its water to bulge out on the side closest to the moon or the side farthest from the moon. These bulges of water are high tides.

But low tides and high tides are not the only effect of the moon on earth. The moon also has several serious but largely unknown or hidden effects on human life and activities.

Our early ancestors knew that no human being is unaffected by the moon and its mystical powers, whether they believe this or not.

In his article, “The Occult Power of the Moon,” in the American magazine New Worlds of Mind and Spirit, author D.J. Conway wrote: ‘’Policemen, firemen, paramedics, bartenders and hospital workers know that a full moon brings more dramatic, dangerous problems. A team of psychiatrists in Florida compiled the report on murders in Dade Country and Greater Cleveland, Ohio, over a 15-year period. They found a sharp increase in deadly violence during the full moon.

“A similar study done in New York charted peaks in robbery, assault and car theft when the moon was full. Research in Buffalo, New York, discovered an increase in suicides during the full moon.”

Law enforcement

Unfortunately I cannot cite any local statistics on the effects of the moon on crime and vehicular accidents in the country because I know of no similar studies. Maybe the Philippine National Police should undertake such a study. It will help the cause of effective law enforcement here.

“The new moon also affects humans,” said Conway, “especially those with mental instability.” He cited the 16th-century physician, mystic and alchemist Paracelsus, who wrote: “The new moon made mentally unstable people worse.”

Do you know that the word “lunatic,” meaning crazy, comes from the Latin word for moon, luna?

But Conway pointed out that the effects of the moon on earthly life are not all negative. “Fishermen in Nova Scotia (in Canada) have passed down the information for many years that the largest catches of herring can be taken at the full moon. The grunion (fish) of California spawn according to the full moon and high tides.”

Other studies have shown that during full moon, a woman’s menstrual blood flow is greater, and so is the flow of blood during surgeries.

It is best, therefore, if possible, that operations not be performed during the full moon.

But is there any doctor in the Philippines who would look up to the sky before performing surgery? The answer is obvious.

According to Conway, the new moon “is a time for introversion, starting new projects and plans, and making personal changes in general.”

It is an excellent time for self-examination in everything—from your love life, career, moving into a new house and breaking habits, to spiritual intentions.

If you must undergo surgery of any kind, check the moon before setting the date.

“By cutting your hair and nails during a waxing moon,” said Conway, “they will grow back stronger and faster. Certain plants grow better when planted during certain phases of the moon.”
