’20 Before 2020′ is a series of 20 stories and listicles in celebration of 2019 and in anticipation of 2020. We’re going to take a look back at fashion and beauty trends we loved, the moments that made us click “Share” and the other newsmakers that kept the group chats buzzing.
These days, everyone’s pushing collaborations left and right. A trend created by legendary designer and creative genius Karl Lagerfeld and H&M in 2004, collaborations make for one of the most viable marketing strategies. For consumers, designer collaborations with fast-fashion giants make designer goods more accessible, while partnerships between iconic brands and celebrated artists make for highly-covetable merchandise that fans don’t mind waiting in line for. Here, we take a trip down memory lane through a list of this year’s most memorable designer collaborations.
H&M x Giambattista Valli
H&M is known for its annual designer collaborations which have always been much-awaited. Last May, the brand announced its partnership with renowned designer Giambattista Valli by having supermodel Kylie Jenner in one of the collection’s pieces at the Cannes Film Festival. The collection was nothing short of romantic as it included ruffled blouses and gowns as well as snake-effect trousers and a leopard print coat.
H&M x Johanna Ortiz
Another collab of highly covetable wares is H&M’s collection with Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz, which also marks the Swedish fast fashion giant’s first collaboration with a Latin American designer. As H&M’s website reads, “This is for the girl that loves ruffles, endless summer and dancing with bare feet.”
Reebok x Victoria Beckham
We simply can’t get enough of all things “Posh.” Victoria Beckham‘s collaboration with Reebok combines unisex streetwear styles that reflect VB’s unique aesthetic. High performance meets minimalistic design with windbreakers and crewneck sweaters to cropped sweatshirts and joggers that are stylish enough to wear post-workout.
Vans x Vivienne Westwood
For a collection that celebrates fearless individualism, Vivienne Westwood and Vans have created a line of unisex sneakers that feature Westwood’s signature prints on Vans’ iconic low top canvas pairs.
adidas x Missoni
Italian fashion house Missoni and adidas have collaborated once again bringing Missoni’s textile expertise to adidas’ PulseBoost design. Colorful knits in shades of orange, teal, black, and white, multicolored laces, and the brand’s signature white stripes on the side make up the six PulseBoost models in addition to sixteen sportswear pieces.
Bvlgari x Alexander Wang
Alexander Wang reimagines Bvlgari’s iconic Serpenti for an exclusive limited-edition handbag collection featuring six different designs such as a the double flap-cover belt bag with two new snakehead closures, the ‘Triplette’ shoulder bag inspired by a Bvlgari heritage watch from the 1960s, and a tote bag with a snakebite detail, among others.
Marc Jacobs x Peanuts
A fan of the Peanuts comic strip, Marc Jacobs has created a line that pays homage to his favorite crew. The collection includes a leather box bag that resembles a lunchbox, a jacket, a micro mini skirt, plus other leather goods and apparel featuring an original Peanuts comic strip.
Stella McCartney x The Beatles
Last July, Stella McCartney released the ‘All Together Now’ collection, which is inspired by The Beatles’ film ‘Yellow Submarine.’ The collection features up-and-coming musical talents KEYAH/BLU, Joy Crookes, Oscar Jerome and Femi Koleoso in designs like a shirt that says ‘All You Need is Love’, outerwear adorned with Beatles badges and embroidery, and a candy-colored faux free coat. The collection ranges from McCartney’s women’s and men’s ready-to-wear to childrenswear.
Stella McCartney x Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift and Stella McCartney have teamed up for a sustainable ready-to-wear and accessories collection dubbed ‘Lover’ to mark the debut of Swift’s album. The collection features rainbow and tie-dye band T-shirts, sweaters, hats, and bags.
IKEA x Virgil Abloh
Virgil Abloh together with IKEA created a limited edition collection dubbed ‘MARKERAD’ featuring updated a range of everyday objects updated with Abloh’s trademark aesthetic. According to Abloh, “The ethos of the collection is to add an artful quality to anonymous objects.”
Giuseppe Zanotti X Rita Ora
In collaboration with British singer Rita Ora, Giuseppe Zanotti created a range of shoes that includes stiletto heels, over-the-knee boots, and slides with gold Cuban-link accents and in punchy hues that are sure to make a statement.
