The age of video calls is the perfect time for earrings

Remember shoes?

Video conferences in the time of quarantine have turned us into webcam-mediated talking heads.

Think about it: Video-calling has several pros and cons. No SPF, no problem. I guess makeup doesn’t have to last that long.

A downside, as one colleague laments, is that she misses dressing up. Indeed “dressing up” has evolved a new meaning of literally dressing upwards of the torso.

Working as a stylist, I remember looking at those Gloria Baume-styled beauty editorials in Teen Vogue. I was in awe of how much color and texture you can pack into a headshot, to make a visually rich image.

Considering our recourse can’t quite be the Elizabethan collar or a funky hat, has there been a more appropriate time to consider earrings?

On the bombastic side of the spectrum are earrings that would probably derail the start of an online meeting, if only because they need their own fifteen minutes of small talk.

Like the Balenciaga “mermaid shell” earrings or the door knockers—why not?

Another great example of supplicating shimmery definition to the face, sans the sweep of highlighter, is conscientiously stacking a collection of small subtler pieces, Adwoa Aboah style.

Of course the good news is that this doesn’t necessarily require actual multiple piercings. Smaller clip-ons, like the Gucci double G’s, were made exactly for this purpose.

There is also a case to be made for keeping it simple-but-not-really.

Look at Bella Hadid. Full lash, full lip, full hoop. Perhaps a bit much for a work-from-home sitch, but nothing too intense that crappy internet can’t downplay.

Or Hailey Baldwin Bieber; she’s got the love, she’s got the hoops. That’s what we want.

Think: Dua Lipa on the Future Nostalgia album cover. That’s the vibe.
