Styles Notes: Pale yellow in our minds

I recently saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and while it is a cinematic masterpiece, what you don’t hear said much about it is how many great yellow costumes there are in it.

From Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton’s mustard turtleneck and Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth’s Hawaiian shirt, to Margot Robbie’s Sharon Tate’s pre- and pregnancy wardrobe, we see in the film fantastic yellows seemingly plucked from Van Gogh’s sunflowers, foregrounding the rich yellow of the Californian sunset.

We’ve seen a lot of iconic yellow in movies, like the tartan skirt suit in Clueless, and Kate Hudson’s ageless silk evening dress in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days.

Beyond cinema, yellow is a color I have long stanned and predict to be a enduring mood post-lockdown. After all, yellow is the color of optimism and the promise of brighter, sunnier days.

For inspiration, in recent cultural churn outs, there is Bella Hadid’s “yellow jacket series” in bed, featuring a pale yellow jacket from Bode.

The Fall 2020 runways have also given us yellow looks to remember, like the opening look at Marc Jacobs, a yellow so soft it can only be described as unassuming butter, or fresh pasta.

There is also that embellished sheath dress at Prada, a resplendent party dress just waiting to sparkle in the outside world.
