Rica Peralejo’s homeschooling techniques see her talking a lot with her son

As a mom with a son who’s being homeschooled, Rica Peralejo is left with the task of teaching his eldest even during their school break. This she does along with her other duties as a mom.

“Here we are today, on a homeschooling break, nursing a sick baby all day. My butt must be glued to the sofa na, cause it’s been a while since my eldest came up to me with the question of ‘timezone’ and we started talking,” she said in her Instagram post yesterday, Oct. 3, where she is seen breastfeeding her baby in a couch while seated near her son.

Instead of googling the answer for him, she used a poem, “The Sun Travels” to give him an idea. She also used an Oceans Atlas book which they have in his shelf, and an airline workbook freebie which he got from one of their flights. Also, she used the world clock on her phone and memories from all of their travels.

The timezone question led to other topics which made them discuss further.

“Our talk brought us not only to an understanding of timezones, but of climates, weathers, seasons, ramen, Philippine beaches, what a cape is, why the Red Sea is called thus, how he likes the East a lot, fixed directions, snail mail, e-mails, postcards, stamps, fruits in Singapore, and more,” she said.

Her use of “a mix of things: poetry, books, clock, and experience” is “far better than a googled answer,” she explained, plus she didn’t have “to get up from the couch.”

“I guess then all I want to say is that homeschooling can be on a break but learning never stops, and that if we only talk to our kids a lot, so much of their learning does not have to be forced,” she said. “Lastly, when in doubt, provide quality materials, rituals, experience. They reap heaps in time.” JB
