Listeners embrace ‘Super Evil,’ Inquirer’s true crime podcast

“Super Evil,” Inquirer Podcasts’ true crime podcast powered by PumaPodcast, launched last week and listeners have embraced the show. It has been on the top podcast charts in the country since the day the first episode became available. Listeners have reached out to the “Super Evil” team in messages and on social media posts, telling them that they had been waiting for a local true crime podcast like this. Chino Singson of The Itchyworms, who got to listen to the first episode before it was released, tweeted, “This podcast is seriously next level. Can’t wait to listen to the whole series!”

Episode 2 just came out on Oct. 9, with new episodes dropping every Friday.

“Super Evil’s” first season, called “Hatched in Hell,” covers the case of the 1993 murders of University of the Philippines Los Baños students Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez. Among those convicted of the crime is Antonio Sanchez who was then Mayor of Calauan, Laguna. This crime shocked the Philippines and case developments were featured regularly on the Inquirer front page.

“I didn’t realize how little I knew about this case,” wrote a listener on Instagram.

Expect more surprises in the upcoming episodes. Episode 3, which will be out on Oct. 16, will take you to the courtroom for the trial of Sanchez and his co-accused.

Among the many voices you’ll hear in “Super Evil” are Sen. Franklin Drilon who was then Justice Secretary, Raffy Alunan who was Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government, Sen. Ping Lacson who headed the Presidential Anti-Crime Commission task force assigned to the case, former Bureau of Corrections chief Benjamin de los Santos who was part of the Philippine National Police investigating team and Filemon Nolasco, the lawyer of the Gomez family. You’ll also hear from Inquirer reporters who covered the case.
