Angel Locsin appeals for stop to gender-based violence: ‘Lockdown made it worse for abused victims’

Actress Angel Locsin is supporting the call to stop gender-based violence in the country, as she sees there is a growing number of victims from different forms of violence.

“Gender-based violence is real. In the Philippines, [one] in [four] women has experienced spousal abuse,” she stated in her Instagram page yesterday, Oct. 25. “In the first 35 days of community lockdown, the PNP recorded 682 or 19.2 incidences daily.”

What’s disappointing is the fact that “the lockdown has made it worse for many abused victims – whether men, women, children or members of LGBTQ,” she noted

Locsin cited cases that would fall into the classification of gender-based violence, through a series of posters.

“Binugbog ka ba dahil ‘babakla-bakla’ ka? Gender-based violence ‘yan!” (Were you mauled because you act gay? That’s gender-based violence.)

“Bawal ang tsismis sa Bawal ang Bastos Law.” (Rumor-mongering is prohibited under the “Bawal Bastos” law.)

“Kahit ilang sinaing pa ang masunog, hindi ka dapat binubugbog.” (No matter how much rice you’ve burned while cooking, you should not be mauled.)

“Ninakaw niya ang password ng Facebook ko.” (My partner stole my Facebook password.)

“Pinipilit niya akong makipag-cybersex.” (He is forcing me to engage in cybersex.)

“Ikakalat daw niya ang video namin kapag nakipag-break ako sa kanya.” (He warned that he will spread our video if I break up with him.)

“Nambabae/nanlalaki pa rin siya kahit kami na.” (He is still cheating on me even after we became a couple.)

“Ayaw niya magsuot ng condom pero ayaw niya ring gumamit ako ng family planning.” (He does not want to use a condom but he also does not want me to practice family planning.)

Locsin offered help by asking netizens who are victims of violence to send a message to Lunas Collective, an organization which supports victim-survivors.

“[We] are encouraging advocates to spread awareness to keep our homes safe,” she said. Locsin then urged her fans and followers to “post a black-and-white photo with a strong stop sign,” with or without graphics, as part of the awareness campaign. JB
