He may still be young, but there’s one thing that actor Kyle Echarri already knows about parenting and raising kids – parents who are too strict with their children tend to end up with teenagers who go wayward.
Echarri shared his thoughts when asked about restrictions imposed on him by his parents during the online press conference for iWantTFC’s original “Bawal Lumabas: The Series,” held last Tuesday, Dec. 8.
“Kasi ang na-realize ko lang sa mga kagaya ko na teenagers, most of the people that do bad stuff are kids na istrikto ang parents. My parents have never been strict. Alam po kasi nila na kung strict sila ay gagawin ko po ‘yung ipinagbabawal nila,” he explained. “So, they tell me, alam mo kung ano ang ginagawa mo. Make sure you’re doing it right.”
(What I realized with teenagers like me is that most of the people who do bad stuff were kids who had strict parents. My parents have never been strict because they know that if they’re strict, I will just end up doing what they restrict me from doing. So they tell me, “You know what you’re doing. Make sure you’re doing it right.”)
Instead of telling him what he should or should not do, Echarri’s parents just guide him, which is also why his family means a lot to him. When the country was hit by the pandemic, Echarri was distraught that his family is in Cebu and he’s in Manila.
“I think the hardest thing that happened to me was the first announcement [of] lockdown [really because] I was like going through a lot,” he said. “I was going through a lot because alam ko po na magla-lockdown pero hindi ko po alam kung gaano katagal.” (I was going through a lot because I knew that there would be a lockdown but I did not know for how long.)
Echarri did all that he could to be reunited with his dad in Cebu.
“We were able to go to Cebu in time before everywhere was locked down. At least nagkasama naman kami sa start ng quarantine,” he said. (At least we were able to be together at the start of the quarantine.)
Meanwhile, Echarri plays Kevin in the series, a bad boy and an insecure guy bent on having the affections of his romantic interest, Jade, played by Francine Diaz. JB
