Doug Kramer talks leading by example when it comes to raising son Gavin

Basketball player Doug Kramer has a list of things he hopes his son will value growing up, and is aware that he has to set a good example for him.

Kramer articulated his thoughts on raising his only son Gavin on his Instagram post yesterday, Jan. 2, where he posted two photos of them. Gavin is set to turn 7 this January.

He shared the quote, “Fathers should know that sons follow their example, not advice.”

Reflecting on the statement, he wrote, “I hold myself accountable for my son’s growth and demeanor. It’s true, he follows my example more than what I say. Especially during the times he says that he wants to be just like me. It takes constant guidance and discipline.”

Then, he listed things he wants Gavin to strictly follow as he is growing up.

“First, he needs to respect himself, his family, the women he meets, and most especially take care of His walk with the Lord.

“To work hard more than just relying on talent. That we’re not perfect and that mistakes are part of the journey to success.”

Another value he wants to impart: “Family first always over work.”

The retired cager admitted to feeling pressure as a parent, stating, “There’s so much more I need to live up to for my kids.”

Kramer welcomed the new year at home with his family, including wife Cheska Garcia, Gavin and his daughters Kendra and Scarlett. He and Garcia have been married for 12 years. NVG
