With the kind of year that we’d been through, we want to be assured of good luck in this new year. If growing certain plants promises to bring the prosperity and abundance that we seek, then why not invest time and effort on them?
We’ve listed five plants that are said to bring prosperity to their owners, according to avid plant growers.
Fortune plant
The fortune plant (Dracaena fragrans massangeana) is the most common plant that Filipinos grow for luck. It is considered especially lucky when it starts to bloom. This is one of the least expensive plants to grow and is very easy to maintain, too.
It can grow in natural light and survive in low light settings, too. It grows slow thus making it perfect for small spaces. Misting leaves and soil is enough.
Goosefoot
Syngonium podophyllum or goosefoot is considered a feng shui plant. The leaves change from an arrow-shaped to a distinctive five-lobed leaf. These lobes represent the five elements of nature which are air, fire, water, wood and metal, achieving the perfect balance. Caring for it includes not exposing it to direct sunlight. It will sit perfectly on your work desk to purify air.
Chinese money plant
Nothing can be luckier than a plant named after money. The Chinese money plant (Pilea peperomioides) is said to attract wealth and abundance for its owner, mainly because the leaves of the plant look like coins sitting atop each other. Your plant should be placed where there is light but not direct sunlight.
‘Pachira aquatica’
Another plant that goes by the name of money tree is the Pachira aquatica. Multiple Pachira aquatica plants are often braided together for more luck. This grows well even in low-light settings. This is the plant of choice of plantito doctor Johannes Dayrit (@docyow on Instagram). He said that besides the luck it brings, it also makes patients feel good and relaxed when they see trees inside his clinic. He encourages his colleagues to bring their own plants, too.
Red Maranta Prayer Plant
Illuminating is Pantone’s color of the year. This is why we saw a lot of photos of people wearing yellow on New Year’s Eve. Plantitos and plantitas can up that luck by acquiring or featuring 1-800-Flowers.com Plant of the Year, the Red Maranta Prayer Plant, on their Instagram feed.
The Red Maranta Prayer Plant or Calathea was chosen because the “leaves fold like hands in thankfulness, encourage us to connect with others and make the most of life’s special moments.”
Calathea grows best in indirect sunlight and its soil must be kept moist.
The online shop also named the sunflower Flower of the Year.
