Inspiration can come from anywhere. And design inspiration is abundant from virtual neighbors in the Facebook group Home Buddies.
The group has amassed 1.7 million members as of this writing. It’s a community page where members can ask and share ideas for home decoration and homebuilding. It’s like an HGTV channel converted into an FB page, set in the Philippines.
There are plenty of interior design ideas to be found in the group. Trends often start with posts that begin with a disclaimer: “Sharing not to brag but to inspire.”
One recent trend that caught on is the buy one-take one mirror wall. Homeowners bid their farewells to blank walls and started gluing mirrors on them.
It got so popular that one group member shared that you only need to mention “Home Buddies” and “mirrors” to the SM Home salesperson and he would know exactly what you are talking about.
“I loved to have mirrors at home not just because of their practical use but also because they are a cheap and stylish accessory. They have a magical ability to make the room seem larger and brighter,” said Lorelin Feliciano-Sia.
Sia used the mirror with white frames in her dining area. She has gained a small group of fans within the group because of her posts, including the organization of her pantry.
Much cheaper
What makes the mirror deal quite attractive is that its price ranges from P299-499 only, much cheaper than having it customized.
The majority of those who followed this trend used a No Nails bond to stick the mirror onto the wall.
Like Feliciano-Sia, Liz Agustin also placed a mirror wall next to her dining set. She chose wooden frames, which match the color of her tabletop. The Scandinavian-theme dining area looks clean and ’Gram-worthy.
Agustin has some tips on how to do the mirror project. First, she said, measure the spot where you intend to put the mirrors up.
“Installing them would be so easy even when you do it on your own because you’ve measured it beforehand,” she said. “Be careful when you use the No Nails glue because it can be very sticky on the hands. Make sure that you don’t get beyond the line, otherwise you might need to retouch the paint of your wall. ”
Another member cautioned against using the No Nails bond for such projects. He said that the bond was not intended to be used for heavy items like framed mirrors. The strength of the adhesive depends on the quality of the paint beneath. Constantly check for any lifts on the corner or edges months down the road to see if the adhesive still holds.
Most important to consider before taking on the mirror wall makeover is to check the neatness of the area you wish to install it. Mirrors reflect images. So while it can make a space appear bigger, it can also double the clutter. You’ll know you are ready to do this DIY when the area is clean and organized. INQ
