Here’s more proof that women are still getting paid less than men: Natalie Portman said that Ashton Kutcher got paid three times more than her in 2011.
Natalie and Ashton worked on the film No Strings Attached in 2011. In an interview with Marie Claire UK, Natalie says that she was aware of it but just “went along with it.”
“His
was three times higher than mine, so they said he should get three times more. I wasn’t as pissed as I should have been. I mean, we get paid a lot, so it’s hard to complain, but the disparity is crazy,” Natalie says. She adds,“In Hollywood, we are making 30 cents to the dollar” when normally, women in other professions are paid 80 cents to the dollar.Nevermind that she’s an Oscar-winning actress with blockbuster films like Black Swan and Jackie, or that she’s working just as hard as her male counterparts. She’s obviously not safe from the gender pay gap in Hollywood either.
There were also other actresses—Oscar-winning too—who’ve opened up about Hollywood’s gender pay gap like Rooney Mara and Jennifer Lawrence. Patricia Arquette also brought this up during her Oscars speech in 2015.
Nonetheless, Natalie does want this problem in Hollywood and other workplaces to be fixed. “I don’t think women and men are more or less capable, we just have a clear issue with women not having opportunities,” she says. “We need to be part of the solution, not perpetuating the problem.”
