As I predicted, I would have to do a part two on San Juan, La Union eats. I haven’t scratched the surface on this town’s hidden treasures so this time, I’m adding some under the radar eats that are just as good with a sure bang for your buck.
1. Makai Bowls
Let’s start with something healthy. Makai Bowls serves fresh and seasonal fruit shakes but what they are really known for are their healthy breakfast bowls. Chia and fruit-based purées of readily available produce. They also have sourdough sandwiches filled with mushrooms, tomatoes, and spreads. A haven for health buffs and vegetarians. I find them to be a great option too for those who want to pick up some start of the day healthy habits. Instagram: @makaibowls
2. Nak Nak
For all-day dining of traditional Pinoy food, there’s Nak Nak. A simple home-cooked meal of what we are used to done the Nak Nak way. You point to the photos on the wall and dine in a self-service type of setting. Meals have a clean taste to them and they have vegetarian options as well! Vegetarians: try their vegetable breakfast omelette. It’s a hearty size that’s good for sharing. Whatever Filipino dish you crave they have almost all of it. Just point point! You won’t miss it in the Urbiztondo strip, Mc Arthur Highway.
3. Papa C’s
A fairly new player in the dining scene is Papa C’s all-day dining. Some Tex-Mex dishes like tacos and quesadillas. Continental salads. Ribs, grilled steaks of different cuts served with sides of mash and vegetables. Soup of the day and pasta dishes. Another highlight to this place is their adjacent wine and liquor store called Luckies. Travelers from Manila need not bring their bulky coolers filled with libations. This place proved there was progress for San Juan during the lockdown. Instagram: @papacselyu @luckieselyu
4. Hiraya
Last in this list is a special place in the mountains of Brgy. Legleg, San Juan, La Union. The menu is simple and no frills. Offerings change weekly depending on what’s available to the province. They are open mostly on weekends and have started to do Mondays (call or message them to be sure). Dishes may be simple but the place boasts of lush views and Instagrammable corners. They serve wine and have a happy hour cocktail menu which perfectly compliments sunset drinks and a gentle breeze. Look them up @hiraya_official
