Caritas Manila sets Sept. 13 digital telethon for poor students | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Caritas Manila, the lead social service and development ministry of the Catholic Church, will have a digital telethon on Sept. 13, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. over Radyo Veritas 846 AM radio station with a livestream on to raise money for its scholarship program.

The proceeds from the digital telethon will fund 5,000 scholarships under Caritas Manila’s Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP) for school year 2022. The scholarship is open to poor but deserving students nationwide. Priority is given to college students and those taking up vocational-technical courses from the country’s poorest provinces and from among the urban poor in Metro Manila.

Over 20,000 students have benefitted from YSLEP since 2017.

A unique value-added feature of YSLEP is Caritas Manila Scholars Association (Camasa), a community of Caritas Manila graduate scholars. All YSLEP graduates automatically become members of Camasa. Caritas Manila continues to monitor them after graduation to ensure that they are gainfully employed and transitioning out of poverty and that they remain active in Church and community services. Each graduate scholar is also encouraged to pay it forward by becoming YSLEP donors.

“Education is the best and most effective way to fight poverty,” said Caritas Manila executive director Fr. Anton CT Pascual. “We believe that the future servant leaders of the country will come from the poor.”
