Jose Mari Chan with Oh, Flamingo! is the Christmas crossover we don’t deserve

We all thought Jose Mari Chan already reached his peak Filipino Christmas Who Is Not Santa™ posterman image when his singing voice in malls became the official indicator of the start of the yuletide season. Not to mention when he also sang a recent earworm we hear in trains and random Youtube ads right now.

But yes, it only gets better, especially now that this Christmas man collaborates with one of today’s local indie rock bands, Oh, Flamingo! Seeing both music pioneers of different generations and genres in one studio, harmonizing their way to making that Christmas jingle we never saw coming? Count us in.

On Dec. 2, the band revealed this crazy crossover on their vlog Birdwatching, a compilation of Oh, Flamingo!’s various thingamajigs as a band, from guitar tutorials to listicles like “Top 10 best things to do in La Union.” This goes to show that the typical viewers might be immune to all the random stories this band put up on their Youtube channel, but admit it, this has got to be one of the craziest one yet. This 12-minute episode consists of many happy things: a few are Jose Mari Chan casually singing his hits for Oh! Flamingo beside a sink, random clips of their much-awaited collaborative recording, and my favorite, Mr. Chan in his earphones, approving the band’s “The Bottom of This” music video.

“You know the feeling when you meet a person who is so different in a way na ang ideal ‘nung behavior niya t’as nakaka-inspire,” vocalist Howard Luistro expressed at the start of the vlog. We totally get you, dude.
