What’s most moving about the wishes that we received from readers for our paper’s 36th anniversary is how simple so many of them are—like Melinda Adriano, who just wanted mixed nuts for her husband Joel.

She wrote, “Our family is a happy subscriber of your newspaper for more than 30 years. Our mornings are never complete without it in our breakfast table. We are glad that you’re giving away gifts on your anniversary.

“Can I request a pack or a jar of mixed nuts for my husband? His name is Joel. Hope you can grant his simple Christmas wish.”

We asked Melinda, out of all the things in the world she could wish for, why mixed nuts? “I chose the mixed nuts because he enjoys munching them while watching TV at night. It’s a relaxing reward after work. He also shares it with the whole family. Masarap ang aming kwentuhan kung may kutkutin.”We reached out to Millie Dizon, SM’s senior vice president of marketing and communications and a longtime friend of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Her reply was fast: “Sure, would love to grant their wishes.”

Joel’s mixed nuts are just one of a number of readers’ wishes our partner SM is granting to celebrate Inquirer’s 36h anniversary. And in true SM fashion, the cans of Blue Diamond Mixed Nuts (a delicious mix of pecans, almonds, cashews and peanuts) were wrapped beautifully when they were delivered. All we had to do was add an Inquirer shirt and a stuffed Guyito toy, Inquirer’s beloved mascot, to the SM bag.

Guyito accompanied the granted wish.

Melinda sent us a message: “My husband received the mixed nuts that I wished for him. Thank you so much. We didn’t expect that it will be granted, considering the millions of subscribers who also requested.

Thanks also for including Guyito and a nice T-shirt in the package. Nice to know that PDI cares and answers wishes. Merry Christmas and wishing you more years of news. Congratulations!”
