We’re once again closer to getting male birth control out in the market and it’s reportedly 100 percent effective.
According to The Guardian, scientists came up with Vasalgel, which is a “reversible and less invasive form of vasectomy.” It’s basically a gel that’s injected into the sperm duct and creates a barrier for them.
The best part is that a study published in Basic and Clinical Andrology shows that the gel is 100 percent effective on primates. That said, non-profit group Parsemus Foundation is set to start human trials soon.
“Men’s options for contraception have not changed much in decades. There’s vasectomy, which is poorly reversible, and condoms. If they knew they could get a reliable contraceptive that could also be reversed I think it would be appealing to them,” says Catherine VandeVoort of the California National Primate Research Center. “They wouldn’t have to worry about it on a day-to-day basis. This would be more akin to an IUD in women.”
Also, remember when 20 men dropped out of a male birth control trial because of hormonal side effects? They’ll be glad to know that this birth control won’t have any as it doesn’t interfere with sperm production and hormone levels.
Although there are still no details on when they’ll put this out in the market, this is a promising breakthrough. We can now say that equality exists even with birth control options. Yay for science!
