On the occasion of the Month of the Francophonie, the Alliance Française of Manila in collaboration with the Romanian Embassy presented the screenings of two Romanian artistic feature films.
The two movies, which were introduced by Xavier LeRoux, the executive director of the Alliance Française, and by Romania Ambassador Răduța Matache, are part of a cultural phenomenon known by cinema lovers as “the new wave Romanian cinema.” It is a movement which propelled several Romanian artistic films into the consciousness of the international public and juries.
New wave Romanian cinema approaches universal topics, such as love, life and death; nostalgia; adaptation to new circumstances from new and unexpected angles. “Domestic” tells the story of children, adults and animals who live together trying to have a better life, amid bizarre and insignificant conflicts, while “A Decent Man” is a story about love, choices, ethics and morality. It illustrates how difficult it is to be a decent man, despite one’s best intentions.
Both films were enjoyed by the audience, which included members of the diplomatic and consular corps. The screenings were spiced with the flavor of high quality Romanian wines and French delicacies.
More events and screenings of Romanian movies can be expected as Romania and the Philippines celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations this year. —Contributed INQ
