Here’s a sunscreen that corals will love

In my quest of finding cruelty-free products, I stumbled upon Magwai, a local brand that makes reef-safe sunscreen.

If you didn’t know, most sunscreens contain chemicals that are detrimental to corals. Four common chemicals—specifically oxybenzone—leaches the corals of their nutrients and bleaches them white. Just one drop is toxic to as many as 6.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools. as According to the National Public Radio (NPR), about 14,000 tons of sunscreen lotions end up in coral reefs around the world every year.

So it’s a good thing I chanced upon Magwai, a physical sunscreen that uses natural minerals (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) that are safe for our coral reefs.

Besides being reef-safe, Magwai also installed recycling bins in partner retail stores where customers can drop off used packaging. Magwai will then pick up the bottles for recycling.

It’s good to know that more and more companies are becoming aware of our environment’s current state and are actually doing something about it. If you have more brands in mind that also do their part in saving the planet, please do tell us!
