The day of a nation’s independence is always an occasion that merits a celebration; more so, one that coincides with the anniversary of the diplomatic relationship of two countries.
So, on June 2, the Embassy of Italy in Manila celebrated the 76th Republic Day of Italy in conjunction with the 75th year of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Italy.
The glittering Grand Hyatt Ballroom in Bonifacio Global City was packed with over 400 guests, among them government officials, members of the diplomatic and consular corps, business leaders, and members of the Italian community in the Philippines.
This was no ordinary celebration, however. For many guests, this marked the return to diplomatic events after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The organizers made sure that this would be a memorable return to form.
The event included a free flow of Italian vino rosso, vino bianco and prosecco, an exhibition of Rome’s candidacy to Expo 2030, as well as toasts from both Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. and Italy Ambassador Marco Clemente.
The event was a celebration not only of Italy’s independence as a nation, but of the warm and friendly relationship between Italy and the Philippines. Side by side, Filipinos and Italians sat, talking and laughing, heralding what is hopefully a friendly relationship for years to come.
The evening not only showcased the beauty and grandeur of Italian culture and history; it also stood as a beacon to the sense of family and home that both nations cherish.
