Former news anchor Ces Drilon has come to appreciate the many uses of bamboo during her recent visit to Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental.

Drilon marveled at the versatility of bamboo as can be seen in her Instagram page today, Aug. 11, where she shared photos and a short video of how bamboos are used at home.

“Saw so much in my visit to Dumaguete! Visited the amazing @kawayancollective which harvests, treats and processes native bamboo for use in socialized housing. Indeed bamboo is a beautiful and durable building material if processed correctly. And all Filipinos deserve to live in a proper home,” she said in her post.

“This social enterprise is founded by architect Ray Villanueva and his wife Amy whose home is a fab showcase of what can be done with bamboo,” she added.

Inspired by what she saw, Drilon “began to visualize how my farmhouse would look like because I want to use bamboo too! What a wonderful day to manifest my dream!”

In another post two days ago, Aug. 9, Drilon visited Ritual Store also in Dumaguete and was awed by the different products she saw on sale.

“This is one place I miss in Manila. So fascinating to see the creations of @beatbeatrice sourced from coops around the country and of other artisans all under one roof,” she said.

She has become an instant admirer since “many of the products sold here are made the traditional way—painstaking methods that we may be losing.”

“Thanks to the work of Bea, these still exist. So envious of her life in Dumaguete where everything is just a bike ride away,” she said, noting that “in this compound are Sandra Palomar-Quan’s studios and her husband’s Mr. Saigon restaurant.”

“Wish we had Vietnamese food like this in Manila. The main dining featured a work by @gerry.tan of vinyl records painted on with an accompanying video of his process. What a lovely interesting space—age old traditions, good simple no fuss food and contemporary art,” she said.  /ra
