Actor and Department of Science and Technology’s agri-aqua ambassador Marvin Agustin shared that there’s a process of preparing labong (bamboo shoots) to avoid being poisoned when you eat them.
“Alam mo bang nakakalason ang labong o bamboo shoot kapag kinain ito nang hindi napoproseso ng tama?” he said in his Instagram page today, Sept. 7. (Do you know that labong or bamboo shoot can be poisonous when it is eaten while it wasn’t properly processed?)
His post also showed an instructional DOST video.
“Kumakain ka rin ba ng labong or bamboo shoots? Super duper healthy ito pero nakakalason kung hindi tama ang proseso bago kainin,” he said in video.
(Do you eat bamboo shoots? It’s super duper healthy but it can be poisonous if it is not properly processed before it eaten.)
A DOST expert then explained that bamboo shoots have cyanide c0ntent which can poison us when ingested.
“Ang dapat nating gawin ay tanggalin ito sa pamamagitan ng paglalaga o i-boil mo siya. Kailangan mong pakuluan ng 40 minutes bago mo iluto sa gusto mong putahe,” the expert said.
(What we need to do is remove that poison through boiling. You need to boil the bamboo shoots for 40 minutes before you can cook it based on your recipe.)
Aside from being an actor, Agustin is a businessman and chef who owns a chain of restaurants in the country. JB
