Camp et Couture: Moschino Celebrates 40 Years In Fashion | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Heritage plays a large role in the formation of a brand even long after its original founders are gone.

For Italian fashion powerhouse Moschino, this philosophy has effectively served as their brand’s nucleus for over 40 years.

Founded in 1983 by Franco Moschino, the brand gained popularity in Europe for their playful and innovative collections, pushing boundaries and evoking dialogue amidst a highly exclusive sartorial climate. Moschino caused a sensation for his very collection by sending Pat Cleaveland down the runway donning a silk evening dress, sneakers, and a grocery bag in hand. It wasn’t long until the brand was picked up in the United States and made its way to their racks by the Spring of 1984. Moschino also became known for his social awareness, channeling this inspiration through his designs, and often advocating for causes such as HIV/AIDS.

A visionary and innovator, Moschino continues to push boundaries until this very day, grounded by Franco Moschino’s vision of championing change and awareness through fashion.

Below, find some of Moschino’s most memorable and iconic moments on and off the runway.

Spring/Summer 1994

Franco Moschino’s final show for his namesake brand, Moschino’s Spring/Summer 1994 showcased his creativity with Pat Cleaveland sashaying down the runway in what seemed like an homage Olive Oyl, and playful layering of bikinis over a black tshirt and white trousers.

Spring/Summer 1997

After passing away in 1994, Franco Moschino entrusted his brand to his longtime friend, Rosella Jardini. Her 1997 collection with Moschino stayed true to her late-friend’s vision, showcasing Asian inspiration and even hinting a little bit of punk and goth.

Autumn/Winter 2000

For their Autumn/Winter collection, Jardini looked to ‘The Wizard of Oz’ for inspiration. Donning striped tights and pointed headpieces, the collection also payed homage to the beloved children’s story through its colour palette.

Autumn/Winter 2005

Featuring a few puffed sleeves, exaggerated forties prints, and eyelet frilled petticoats, Moschino’s Autumn/Winter 2005 collection was a playful take on decorative froth, embracing the fashion house’s femininity.

Spring/Summer 2010

For Spring/Summer 2010, Jardini showcased a number of gold-clad pieces mixed with leathers and satins. White topstitching traced the lines of a classic trench on a simple black dress, while the sparkly straps of a cocktail number formed a peace sign on the model’s back.

Spring/Summer 2014

With Jeremy Scott now at helm, Moschino took an even campier turn than usual with models donning predominantly red and yellow looks featuring McDonald’s inspired silhouettes and logos.

Spring/Summer 2019

Undoubtedly one of Moschino’s most memorable runway moments, Jeremy Scott worked his magic for their Spring/Summer 2019 collection once again, and produced a frenzy of sketched-on garments. With models making their way down the runway in cartoon-turned-real life ensembles, it’s safe to say that Scott continues to champion Franco Moschino’s exuberant vision excellently.

Spring/Summer 2023

For their most recent collection, Moschino takes a dig at ‘inflation’ — literally. With models rocking pool inflatable apparel and accessories, Scott’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection is a sartorial ode to current events.
