Time to rise up from your sleep, suburban kids. Who knew the “Goddess of Climate Change” was living in the 21st century all along? Well, let’s ask Grimes about it. According to i-D, the Canadian singer-songwriter and visual artist will be popping up in our playlists again with an upcoming album, Miss_Anthropocene. First of all, who is she?
On March 20, she made announcements on Twitter and Instagram, describing the LP as “a concept album about the anthropomorphic goddess of climate change.” This may be rooted from her love for “Godly personifications of abstract/horrific concepts” and her desire to include current issues in her work. We can expect “psychedelic, space-dwelling” sounds in this record, as she describes the character that way.
Our science class soundtracks in elementary (which we were kind of forced to memorize) did their part, but they can now move over. “Climate change is something I’m only ever confronted with in a sad/guilty way,” she wrote on Instagram. Her attempt to make the wakeup call might just be the most effective one yet: Make climate change look like “it can exist as a character and not just abstract doom.” Come to think of it, she’s right. We’re always shaken up by villains, anyway.
Grimes’ last album, Art Angels, was crafted in 2015. Miss_Anthropocene’s release date is yet to be announced.
