Just a few hours ago, local entertainment house GMG Productions released a video of Lin-Manuel Miranda announcing “Hamilton” is coming to Manila! The popular musical will make its Asian premiere in the Philippines at The Theater in Solaire this September 2023.
When Hamilton first premiered off-broadway at the New York Public Theater in 2015, it was only a few months before the sung-and-rapped-through musical took the world by storm. The production earned 16 Tony Award nominations, winning 11, one of which was best musical.
One of the first historical musicals to cast non-white actors, the production tells the story of Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers of the United States of America. Crowd favorites include the British King George III and the bellowing George Washington.
The production was inspired by the 2004 biography of the American statesman Alexander Hamilton, written by historian and biographer Ron Chernow, and later adapted for the stage by world-renowned songwriter, actor, rapper, and playwright, Lin-Manuel Miranda. After 7 years of writing, he created a script mixed with hip-hop, jazz, and R&B music. The script is sprinkled with humorous and witty repartee, as well as heart-wrenching lyrics like in the moving moments in “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story”.
In just a few months, Manila audiences will be able to experience the revolutionary piece of theater that has captured the hearts of millions around the world, now hitting the Philippine stage. Ticket sales are yet to be announced but fans can sign up for the waitlist here.
