Marvel Studios Unveils the Latest Trailer for ‘Secret Invasion’

Marvel Studios just released a brand-new trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series ‘Secret Invasion’.

Picking right up from the first teaser posted back in September of last year, the newly released trailer dives deeper into what fans may expect from the upcoming release while setting the stakes to a height unlike ever before. A key to the establishment of the MCU, Nick Fury is slated to embark on “one last fight” against an unseen enemy, the Skrulls, an alien race capable of shape-shifting to copy any desired target. Now having successfully infiltrated Earth, Fury and his circle of trust are left to their own devices as they attempt to thwart the impending invasion, all while unaware of who to truly trust.

Showcasing the true difficulty of this endeavor, as seen in the new trailer, it seems that Fury will have to fight on multiple fronts, surviving as “the most wanted man on the planet” according to the returning James Rhodes (aka War Machine) all while battling against the alien invaders. Moreover, the trailer also shows Gravik, the leader of the Skrulls, utilizing tendril-like abilities on the battlefield. The MCU’s latest antagonists are not only shape-shifters, but they also have the combat prowess to show for it—this is truly an Avenger’s level threat.

And speaking of the Avengers, it seems as though they will not be showing up to save the day. Not for the convenience of the plot, Samuel L. Jackson shares with Vanity Fair that, “What’s not doing is call calling in his super friends. So that’s part of the whole dilemma. I mean people want them and he’s not bringing them. You’ll find that out. There’s a very good reason he’s holding back.”

In an MCU where all-powerful cosmic-enhanced and reality-warping heroes and villains run rampant, it’s been an issue identifying how “street-level” characters figure into the grand scheme of things. If Wanda Maximoff and Carol Danvers can simply wipe out beloved heroes such as Captain America and Hawkeye in a battle of strength without breaking a sweat, what is the worth of including them on the battlefield—it’s an issue of balancing and power-scaling that is yet to be fully addressed, one that came to light ever since the introduction of much stronger characters. It will be interesting to see how non-powered agents, the literal weakest of the bunch, will hold their own against a global threat without the help of their heroes.

Coming June 21, the title is second in the announced line-up for ‘Phase 5’ of ‘The Multiverse Saga’ after the divisive ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’. ‘Secret Invasion’ looks to showcase an espionage thriller of epic proportions, with S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury set against a rogue group of Skrulls in a battle for the salvation of Earth. A darker and much more serious tone in contrast to other Marvel releases also sparks anticipation for somewhat of a return to form to the likes of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.

The six-episode series features the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. Making their MCU debut are also Olivia Colman as an MI6 agent and Emilia Clarke as G’iah, Talos’ daughter who we last saw in the ‘Captain Marvel’ film in 2019.
