If the band name alone doesn’t raise your parents’ eyebrows, it means either they’re not familiar with Internet chat jargon or they don’t listen to the radio much. (My own dad thought “L.M. Fao” was a Chinese pop star and I left it at that. Sorry, Pa, but it’s for your own good.) Meanwhile, those who do know about the American electropop duo’s cheeky songs and shenanigans might have been a little scandalized at the delicious spectacle that was LMFAO’s “Sorry For Party Rocking Tour,” held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum just after Holy Week.
Expletives and sexual references aside, we honestly believe those folks, especially the chaperones for the underage partyphiles, weren’t sorry for party rocking with their kids that night. Not by a long shot. With his funky entourage in tow, Redfoo (regrettably sans his nephew and partner-in-crime SkyBlu, who was still nursing a back injury) brought the term “party animal” to new heights and got everyone to dance like there’s no tomorrow.
They turned the Big Dome into one giant club with ear-candy hits “Party Rock Anthem,” “Sexy And I Know It,” “I’m In Miami B*tch,” “Shots,” and “Yes,” capped off by Redfoo’s impromptu DJ remixes from his iPhone. Joining them onstage was Asian-American dance group Quest Crew, the winners of season 3 of “America’s Best Dance Crew,” of whom Fil-Am Ryan
Conferido is a member.
Here are our favorite booty-shaking, eyebrow-raising antics from THE party rock concert of the year:
1. A whole lotta wiggling (and giggling). Yup, he’s definitely got passion in his pants and isn’t afraid to show it. Anyone who’s seen the video for “Sexy And I Know It” shouldn’t have been surprised when Redfoo and crew stripped down to their tiny, shiny Speedos and “wiggled” their wares for all the world to see. But to actually see the gyrating up close and magnified by the big screen, well… Let’s just say the wiggling appendages made a lot of jaws drop, eyeballs pop and hands fly to mouths in utter chagrin (or delight).
Afro wigs
2. Disco jungle setting. We appreciate the stern warning about bright lights possibly inducing epileptic seizures, because the Big Dome was a wild, blinding disco jungle that night—afro wigs, animal prints, neon lights, glow sticks, plastic eyeglasses, makeshift Shuffle Bot headgear made of balik-bayan boxes, and a giant inflatable zebra bouncing around in the crowd.
Fans and production crew alike really went all out in translating the fun factor of LMFAO’s songs into a live show, effectively recreating the look and feel of a bona fide dance club. Granted, ticket prices were a little pricier than the average club entrance fee, but it’s not every day one gets to party with thousands of people in one venue.
3. April showers of an intoxicating kind. There was free-flowing liquor everywhere, from the stage to the “dance floor” and bleachers. Redfoo chugged down vodka while performing and even drank from a bong. During the song “Champagne Showers,” Redfoo and the dancers popped open champagne bottles and sprayed them onto the elated partyphiles at the Patron area. We doubt people actually had their mouths open in an effort to catch some droplets, but with the level of inebriation, you never know. Kids, please don’t try any of these at home.
4. Parental guidance is a buzzkill… Not. Okay, maybe the show wasn’t exactly child-friendly, especially with the colorful language and the roving alcohol dispensers. But those obviously didn’t
deter underage kids, some not yet in their teens, from party-rocking, even if it meant going with their parents.
Two little boys tried to teach their dad how to shuffle in the middle of the Patron area, while a young girl in a tank top and short shorts was dancing atop a chair with her bemused-looking parents on either side.
Nevertheless, people of all ages seemed to be having a good time wiggling, shuffling and goodness knows what other dance moves the duo has popularized. If you can’t beat ’em, might as well join ’em.
