What To Expect From “Loki” Season 2

The God of Mischief is back for more

There is no doubt that Loki is one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)—perhaps the most beloved since “Avengers: Endgame,” after the departure of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans from the franchise. While much can be attributed to the growth he attained through his numerous on-screen appearances since “Thor,” it is Tom Hiddleston’s inspired performance that allowed the character to amass widespread acclaim. Similar to Downey Jr.’s synonymy with Iron Man, Hiddleston seems simply born to play the God of Mischief

Now cast as the frontman of his own title, he plays the head honcho instead of the crowd-favorite supporting character. Albeit on the small screen: It’s safe to say that Hiddleston has more than delivered. After all, out of the nine TV series Marvel has produced (aside from “What If?”), “Loki,” is the only show to have been renewed for a second season, and maybe even a third

As the release date for one of the year’s most highly awaited shows draws near with its premier on Disney+ on October 5, 6 PM Pacific Time, here’s what to expect from “Loki” Season 2:

“Loki” Season 2 takes place immediately after the events of the first season. Loki (Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) were introduced to He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), who explains that he was the one who invented the Time Variance Authority (TVA). He explained that the body was enacted as a way to maintain a singular timeline—to prevent the existence of other realities and more importantly, other “He Who Remains variants” who once terrorized the multiverse before

Tired from his endless watch, Majors’ character offers the pair of Lokis a choice: to take over the responsibility as the keeper of the multiverse or to kill him and set everything into chaos. Sylvie, overrun by emotion and unbelieving of what had just been said to her, kills He Who Remains. And it seems he was telling the truth after all.

Perhaps the birth of the next MCU big bad, the events that transpired during “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” was just a taste of what’s yet to come.

In “Loki” Season 2, brokenhearted and plunged into the unknown, Hiddleston’s Loki is tasked to pick up the pieces of a shattered multiverse and prevent an all-out war he knows is coming. Returning for the sophomore season is Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, and Eugene Cordero as Casey/Hunter K-5E. Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan is also set to make an appearance as O.B, a Time Variance Authority archivist

Jonathan Majors is also slated to reprise his role as He Who Remains, this time as Victor Timely, another variant of his, as well as possibly other versions of Kang the Conqueror, similar to the one we met in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”

Majors’ casting as the diabolical and iconic Kang the Conqueror spurred speculation that he would be the MCU’s next big bad, similar to that of Thanos. However, the “Creed III” actor was taken into custody in April earlier this year following a domestic dispute with a 30-year-old woman who was taken to the hospital with “minor injuries to her head and neck.” The arrest has undoubtedly put his future with the MCU into question, specifically concerning his possible appearances in later titles. However, regardless of what happens moving forward, we would at least see him don the mantle of Kang again.

A portion of the upcoming season also places our unlikely band of heroes in an 1890s-era World Fair, where Timely first unveils to the public his Temporal Marvels machine—likely the origin of his time/dimension traveling escapades. Within that same period, Rafael Casal makes an appearance as Brad Wolfe, a movie actor at the time. His exact role within the show remains unclear thus far.

The synopsis for “Loki” Season 2 is as follows:

“‘Loki’ Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15, and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes, and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.”
