I had not seen Cyrene in years. Our paths used to cross in the country club where we both played badminton.
Now, she was seated at a table in our new restaurant Wooden Spoon, waiting for friends. We talked food. I noticed she had a flat white box. Seeing me curious, she offered me a piece of its contents.
It was Crack Pie. My gosh, I had to pretend to drop by her table a few times to see if the service was going well, but in fact hoping to get offered another slice. Ang sarap! She said the place that makes it is not too far from our restaurant.
A few days later, I was off with my family. Chef Ginos is a pizza place that offers pasta and pizza, which are worth sampling. But the Crack Pie is a must. It has an unusual mildly sweet and unique taste that even a foodie would have a difficult time trying to figure out the ingredients. This could be a winner in potluck dinners. My kids, who are otherwise very picky eaters, snapped up the pie in minutes.
Beside Chef Ginos is a donut place, Cellos Donuts. The donuts are also out of this world. With unique flavors like Choc Nut, Cheese, Oreo and a few others, they are heavenly. This will give Crispy Creme a run for its money, but at a fraction of the cost. A box of 12 mini donuts costs less than P200. These two places are a sweet tooth’s haven. Love them!
Fresh juice
One other thing I used to do was drop by Rustan’s Supermarket, which is close to Chef Ginos on Katipunan Avenue, to get a drink of freshly squeezed orange juice. I do this just before I play badminton and it has done wonders for my stamina and my game. Unbelievable what energy this drink gives you before exercising.
You get an orange for P30, but when you have the fresh juice, almost 10 pieces can be squeezed and it all costs less than P200. What a sweet deal!
With the opening of our new resto, I’ve had opportunities to scour the vicinity for delicious food finds. I will always be grateful to my fellow foodie Cyrene for these discoveries.
