First-time nominee Dua Lipa made a striking statement at the Golden Globes tonight.  Recognized for her Original Song nomination “Dance the Night” from the Barbie movie, she strolled down the red carpet in a tailor-made Schiaparelli gown complemented by e a Tiffany & Co. golden beryl necklace from 1962. This seldom-seen archival piece carries a historical narrative that explores how wartime in the 1940s  influenced jewelry trends for the following decades.

The popularity of yellow gold in this era stemmed from the wartime platinum ban, reserved exclusively for war efforts. The use of golden beryl, amidst the selection of “semi-precious” stones adopted by jewelers due to war-related trade restrictions, represents a creative response to challenging circumstances.

Additionally, the beryl contributes to Tiffany & Co.’s rich history of venturing into unique stones, a tradition the house pioneered by introducing and naming stones such as kunzite, morganite, tanzanite, and tsavorite.
