Courtney Love: ‘Every successful woman is cloned’

The alternative rock icon had biting criticism for the likes of Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé, and Madonna

American alternative rock performer Courtney Love made her contempt for certain chart-topping pop divas known on Apr. 13 in an interview with the Evening Standard.

The “Hole” frontwoman sat down with the British outlet to promote the launch of her eight-part series with BBC Radio, titled “Courtney Love’s Women.”

While she expressed joy at the recent success of women in music, Love also criticized the lack of diversity in the industry, calling it “a cliché.”

“Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is just too much music,” said the 59-year-old in her interview. “They’re all the same. If you play something on Spotify, you get bombarded with a lot of stuff that’s exactly the same.”

Love elaborated by expressing her distaste for Beyoncé’s latest album, “Cowboy Carter,” stating that while a “Black [woman] going into spaces where previously only white women have been allowed” is interesting, she “just [doesn’t] like her music.”

She followed with criticism of Taylor Swift, whom she noted as “not important.”

“She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love pointed out.

The singer also had a take on Lana Del Rey, who headlined this year’s Coachella.

“I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should really take seven years off,” she stated.

She capped off her criticisms by revealing the mutual dislike between her and Madonna, saying that she “loved” the pop icon’s 1985 film “Desperately Seeking Susan” but not much else.

“I don’t like her, and she doesn’t like me,” she said.
