TAYO Fashion Week 2024: Championing cultural and sartorial relations between the Philippines and Japan

Founded in 2023, TAYO is a Filipino-led artist initiative based in Osaka, Japan

Following the success of their 2023 fashion showcase, TAYO, the Japan-based, Filipino-led artist initiative is once again shining a light on Philippine talent and design this year from June 12 to June 18.

In a week-long pop-up done in official partnership with Umeda SOUQ on the 10th floor of Hankyu Main Store in Umeda, TAYO aims to not only put a spotlight on Filipino sartorial talent but celebrate the rich heritage of Japanese-Filipino relations.

Established in 1929, Hankyu Umeda is the flagship store of the Hankyu department store chain–one of the world’s oldest department stores. In addition to the establishment’s heritage, Hankyu is also the world’s first “Terminal Department Store” as it is directly connected to a railway station.

Umeda SOUQ provides an immersive experience for sartorialists showcasing a variety of works by local artisans, designers, and independent labels. TAYO Fashion Week will be their very first fully Filipino lineup.

“We are thrilled to partner with Hankyu Department Store’s Hankyu SOUQ for this special pop-up,” the organizers shared. “This event not only cultivates the friendship between the Filipino and Japanese fashion communities but also celebrates Filipino innovation in a premier establishment like Hankyu”

What to expect

Upon arrival, spectators can look forward to a variety of independent Filipino designers and brands such as Feanne, Ken Samudio, J Mäkitalo, and much more. Up-and-coming designers REPAMANA, and SABOTTEN are also set to grace the pop-up.

In addition to the showcase, TAYO Fashion Week 2024 has also launched the TAYO Designer Showcase Program–an initiative created to introduce the abundance of emerging Filipino designers within the Japanese market. The inaugural feature of the said program is the circular fashion label REPAMANA from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.

Pamela Madlangbayan, an alumna of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde FDM program, and educator at the esteemed Bunka Institute of Fashion, explained: “We believe in nurturing the next generation of Filipino designers and providing them with the platform they need to succeed in the competitive fashion industry.”
