‘One Piece’ is celebrating 1,000 chapters with, well, free chapters every week

One thousand manga chapters and 931 anime episodes later, “One Piece” is finally letting readers catch up with wherever the hell they are at this point. How? With free manga, of course.

Luffy and the Straw Hats are inching closer to the 1,000th chapter mark, and it took only 23 years to get there. To celebrate that upcoming milestone, manga publisher Viz Media will be offering free chapters every week.

If you’re wondering if it’s mathematically and physically possible to get up to speed with 23 years’ worth of manga, “One Piece” creator Eiichiro Oda has previously said that he aims to have the 1,000th chapter up by December. The 995th chapter is set for release on Nov. 16, so we’re crossing our fingers along with Oda on this one.

Those feeling up to the challenge can check out old chapters every Wednesday on the Viz Media site. This week, chapters 72 to 81 are posted free for your perusal. Now that’s 919 more chapters left to enjoy. Good luck, and don’t forget to hydrate! (You’ll need it.)
