Zine collectors, here’s how you can share the holiday warmth amid this terrible hell year.
Save San Roque, an alliance that supports the rights of urban poor communities, is hosting a fundraiser through a special holiday zine called “Zinebang Gabi.” The proceeds will benefit residents of Sitio San Roque in Quezon City, one of the largest informal settlements in the country, which has a long-standing struggle against corporate land development since the ’80s.
Some 20,000 residents have been threatened with demolition and eviction over the years as the city and allied businesses have started creating an expanded central business district in the area. In response, the San Roque community has organized itself into the Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap or Kadamay to consolidate their grievances against an idea of development and progress that excludes their right to the city.
Their plight has worsened since the start of the pandemic. Which is why Filipino visual artists and writers organized and created the zine “Zinebang Gabi,” a collection of illustrations, komiks, poems and stories that revolve around the idea of celebrating Christmas during a pandemic. Some of the participating writers, artists and illustrators include Apol Sta. Maria, Rob Cham, Apollo Baltazar, Michelle Bacabac, malayo pa ang umaga, and many more.
If you’re feeling festive and hungry for Xmas-themed art, check out the contributor highlights on Save San Roque’s Twitter and cop their Zinebang Gabi for P350 here.
