Here’s an elevator pitch: “Rick and Morty” meets “Percy Jackson.” Hard pass/yes? Whatever you decide, it’s happening: “Rick and Morty” co-creator Dan Harmon is making an animated comedy set in ancient Greece.
According to the folks over at IndieWire, Fox Entertainment revealed that the story will center on “a flawed family of humans, gods, and monsters [who try] to run one of the world’s first cities without killing each other.” (That’s Greek mythology for you.)
“Leave it to Dan Harmon to turn the mythos of early Greek civilization into remarkably sharp commentary on today’s politics, celebrity, and pop culture,” says Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn.
“This project is an incredibly irreverent family comedy as told by one of the town’s most inventive storytellers,” he continues. “We are proud to be partnered with Dan on this series, which strengthens our hold on the animation space and, as we continue to build Fox Entertainment, marks an important first step for us with our first fully owned scripted property.”
A new animated series from the “Rick and Morty” gods isn’t that surprising, given that we’ve heard about the news way, way back. But this marks a time when full deets are starting to arrive, as part of Fox’s 2020 animation deal with Harmon.
While we wait for the release date that’s yet to be set in stone, let’s start rolling out theories on what could end up on the show—Hades and Persephone? Minotaurs? Oedipus and his mom/wife?? It’s literally a Pandora’s box full of content.
