Y2K cultural blueprint “Sk8er Boi” by Avril Lavigne unfolds like cinema. You have your characters (a boy and a girl, can I make it anymore obvious), a climactic point, and a plot twist that has M. Night Shyamalan shaking.
So, if you’re one of us who, at some point, thought it’d make for a good film, then count yourself lucky—Avril Lavigne is making it into a reality.
Twenty years after the pop-rock song hit the waves, the “Sk8er Boi” story is making its cinematic debut. Speaking to iHeart Radio’s “She is The Voice” podcast, the 37-year-old Canadian musician discussed the song’s long-lasting appeal, which she released when she was just 16.
“To this day, [‘Sk8er Boi’] is one of my favorite songs to play live,” she said. “A lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me.”
She then revealed: “And so, I’m actually going to turn this song into a film. And just take it to the next level.”

Lavigne also hinted at the film’s potential high school setting before its five-year time skip, just as the song’s lyrics convey.
“You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps, jocks,” she said. “It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love… she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”
This isn’t exactly the first time there were talks about “Sk8er Boi: The Movie.” Back in 2003, Paramount Pictures was set to adapt the hit song for the big screen with “ER” writer/producer David Zabel at its helm. It, unfortunately, didn’t become a thing, but hey, here’s to second chances.
