What the heck is ‘Streamberry’ (and the new trailer of ‘Black Mirror’)?

Uh-oh. It looks like “The Truman Show” and “Stranger Than Fiction” enjoyers are winning at life with the fresh “Black Mirror” preview… or not?

Since its last season in 2019, the technology-focused series everyone has a love-hate relationship with is finally back from the dead. On May 31, the trailer of “Black Mirror’s” sixth chapter shook our timelines, especially because it seems to materialize one of the horrifying possibilities in our heads whenever we watch this collection of stand-alone stories: What if someone creates a show out of my life, without my permission or even awareness, to boot?

“Oh my god, she even has your hair,” the trailer opens with a familiar “ta-dum” sound and an even more familiar layout seen on the characters’ TV screens. An average woman (Annie Murphy) sitting on the couch with her partner suddenly notices that her life has been adapted to a TV drama titled “Joan Is Awful”—and the protagonist (Salma Hayek Pinault) even has the same money piece highlights. This disturbing realization is brought to you by “Streamberry,” the satirical version of “Black Mirror’s” home streaming site.

The meta treatment doesn’t stop there. In this season, there’s also “Loch Henry,” which tracks the journey of a couple on a mission to shoot a nature documentary in a Scottish town, but eventually find themselves in a shocking tale of the past. And if you think these don’t feel frightening enough, there’s also “Beyond The Sea,” which tells a tragedy in space. Maybe that’ll intensify people’s fear of the unknown?

Meanwhile, a troubled starlet is aggressively followed by a paparazzi in “Mazey Day”. Then “Demon 79,” set in 1979, centers on a sales assistant who has to perform terrible acts to prevent disaster.

“I’ve always felt that ‘Black Mirror’ should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people—and myself—or else what’s the point? It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself,” series creator Charlie Brooker told Tudum. “The stories are all still tonally ‘Black Mirror’ through-and-through—but with some crazy swings and more variety than ever before.”

The trailer’s description teases that this roster would be the “most unpredictable season yet.” Well, if they would turn my life into a series and make me a literal main character, that’s the mood I would expect, too.

“Black Mirror” season six drops on Jun. 15.
