The ‘mañanita’ saga continues: Debold Sinas is up for promotion

It appears that National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas has another reason to celebrate. Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Camilo Cascolan believes that Sinas is due for a promotion despite having some–ehem–“flaws and lapses.”

According to Cascolan, “I think he needs to be up to a directorial staff or a certain position that is fit most especially for him. I believe he is an expert for training of personnel and recruitment.” It comes as no surprise that Maj. Gen. Sinas is a people person.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you must have heard that the beloved general had a surprise “mañanita” celebration, organized by the NRCPO on May 8. This wouldn’t have been a big deal if the capital wasn’t under ECQ at the time.

The lockdown-violating celebration caused such shockwaves, criminal charges were filed against 18 attendees (including the mañanita man himself) for breaking quarantine protocol, such as not observing social distancing and not wearing masks.

Though the charges were indeed filed, PNP chief Cascolan assured the public (and the birthday boy) that Sinas’ mañanita debacle is now a “closed issue.”

In the same interview, he added that dissenters are exercising their right to protest a little too much. He said, “You should police your own activities there, wag niyo masyadong i-exercise yung chartered independence niyo doon.”

The major general was also embroiled in another controversy a few months back involving a harassment and eviction incident of a retired PNP officer’s family from their Taguig home.

In a statement to the press, Cascolan said, “All officers deserve promotion, most especially General Sinas [who] did his job well. There may be some flaws or lapses on his part [but] in [the] evaluation alone, he has done his job well.”

The position Sinas is being considered for has not yet been disclosed. If the major general is in line for a promotion, truly, anything is possible.
