8 Categories that Should Be in the Oscar’s List

It’s time to place our bets again as this year’s Oscar nominees list is out. Some were expected like La La Land and its 14 nominations. While others were a surprise like Ruth Negga’s Best Actress nod and the fact that there are more black nominees this year (more on that in a bit).

Meanwhile, we’d also like to look past the default awards and recognize other gems from these films. If you’re curious about our favorite trailers and most heartbreaking scenes, then read on. You can also play along by adding your own award in the comments section.

Most Intense Trailer: Fences

Look us in the eye and tell us that Denzel Washington’s reprimanding monologue in didn’t intrigue you. Even angry Viola Davis gave us the chills during that two-minute trailer.

Best Glasses Look: Taraji P. Henson in Hidden Figures

Taraji plays one of three African-American women who worked in NASA. Since she plays a math prodigy, it seemed fitting to place glasses on her. But the look works and she looks like a powerful woman rather than a nerd.

Best Beard: Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver in Silence

We considered this for Most Intense Trailer, but Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver’s beards looked equally great.

Most Unexpected Nomination: Suicide Squad

No one expected this film to get an Oscar nod because of its subpar ratings, but here they are with a nom on Makeup and Styling.  Maybe it’s Jared Leto’s gangster Joker look. But if you ask me, Ryan Reynolds’ burnt-face prosthetics in Deadpool looked more impressive than Jared’s face-to-torso tattoos.

Best Duo: Moana and Maui in Moana

They’re like the little sister-big brother goals that everyone dreams of. Except not everyone gets a Polynesian god for a sidekick.

Most Relatable Line: Passengers

If you’re ever looking for motivation to start your morning, just remember this line from Chris Pratt: “There’s a reason we woke up early.”

Best Heartbreaking Scene: La La Land

For those who haven’t seen La La Land, you can skip this part. Those who have, can we talk about that “what could have been” scene, and the look Seb and Mia gave each other at the bar right after?! That moment of silence between them brought tears to a lot of people’s eyes.

Most Diverse: The Oscars nominees list

We know this isn’t a film, but hear us out. This year, the list consist of six actors and five filmmakers who are African-American. That’s obviously more than last year’s which had no POCs nominated and #OscarsSoWhite became controversial. So we’re giving this award to the Academy. Good job, guys!
