Canada is doing a silent takeover, don’t you think? I would like to believe so as Tim Hortons, their famous coffee joint finds a home here in Manila. To refresh you on just how relevant this place is and how it’s #SoCanadian remember when it went prime time once on How I Met Your Mother.
I’m still a skeptic as Manila is frothed with its own coffee stops, from the commercial to the hole-in-the-wall types that coffee fiends flock in secret. Do we really need another one? I’ll leave that for you to decide as I run down what Tim Hortons offers.
Primary is the Double-Double, a name given to their coffee brew blended with two servings of cream and sugar. It’s sweet but the brew is strong still, the distinct bitterness is still there. A sweet tooth like me prefers the Frozen Cappuccino which is icy and refreshing with the right amount of bitterness and sweetness. It’s going be a life-saver during the incoming warm summer days. Other options are the French Vanilla and the Hot Chocolate which are good if you’re not in the mood for the usual brew. There is nothing spectacular about it, nothing to rush out for.
Practicality is what drives Tim Hortons’ name forward as they serve a huge selection of donuts, including a Boston Creme one topped with a thick layer of chocolate. Muffins are up for those who love their carbs and sandwiches. The Crispy Chicken Ciabatta has a thick chicken patty and isn’t greasy which is always a plus.
When it comes to price, Tim Hortons’ is competitive with small serving of coffee at P70. Ice Coolers, another fare you can opt for if you don’t want coffee, start at P90. Sandwiches hit the P150 mark and up. You can also take home a box of lemon or mint tea if you want to have an affordable treat at home.
So if you do find yourself needing a coffee fix in busy BGC and aren’t in the mood to recite your complicated order nor to be duped by the snazz of a fancy place that has lackluster fare, Tim Hortons delivers. It’s fine but not as good as an import to the Philippines as, let’s say, if Justin Trudeau were to visit our shores again.
