SONA 2024 fashion: A spotlight on the Filipino designers

While the State of the Nation Address (SONA) is not a fashion show, the 2024 red carpet showcases the talent of Filipino designers

While the State of the Nation Address (SONA) is an official ceremony meant to serve as an update on the country’s current situation, the red carpet has become something of a showcase for Filipino fashion.

This year’s SONA has been dubbed the “biggest in Philippine history” based on confirmed attendees, with not just lawmakers and governing figures, but also their wives and a few celebrities.

However, the year’s SONA came with stricter guidelines. House Secretary-General Reginald Velasco emphasized that outfits with derogatory or political messages were banned. “This is a formal event. We will be very strict in the expression of protest in a SONA outfit,” citing the example that a jeep illustration for example would be permissible but a flat-out slogan such as “No to jeepney modernization” would not be allowed.

While the outfits are many, several ensembles captured the attention and showcased the talent of Filipino designers.
